Number Song and Number Words

Next week students will bring home number word flashcards.  Please help them practice at home.  As we sing the number song we recognize the numbers as words, numerals, values in a ten frame and tallies.  There are many different ways to recognize numbers!

Busy Friday

This was our first full week of school in a long time. Six weeks in fact!  We had a very productive Friday.  Students worked in reading groups, practiced writing the letter Xx, and made a dictionary page for Mm.  We also worked on our new book, Number Rumba and did a project as we prepare for the 100th day of school.

We even jumped ahead to March by working on our March calendars.  Please double check the info for activities coming up as the month begins Sunday.

Next week promises to be filled with excitement as we celebrate Dr. Seus' Day Monday and our 100th day on Tuesday!
Reading Groups with Mrs. Parnell!
Working on our 100th day mat with Mrs. Carter!
Working on #3 in our Number Rumba book with Mrs. Hoyt!

Addition and subtraction math story problems

Do we use a + or a -?  Are we putting things together or taking them apart?

There were six crabs on the beach and 3 snails crawled up.  How many sea creatures were there in all?  Or Five sea turtles were in the sand.  Then 2 swam away.  How many sea turtles were left?  What kind of math sentence do we write?  Addition or subtraction?

Flash card math facts

We were impressed with how well everyone is doing with their addition math facts!
The competition of getting the answer quickly is fun!

Vacation journal sharing

Monday morning students returned eager to share what they did over the school vacation week.  We were all challenged to write about our activities in our journals and then share with the class.
I saw Disney on Ice Frozen
I slept over at my grandparents house

Computer time!

We love visiting the computer room!  Mrs. Ardizzoni welcomed us with a few activities before vacation week.  We tried a coding challenge that helps with our math and logic skills and then we did a fun spelling exercise.  We love learning in many different ways!

Reminder:  Keep those brains active during the vacation week.  Mrs. Parnell and Mrs. Hoyt recommend daily read-alouds, encourage kindergartners to write in their journals and to practice flashcards for high frequency words and math facts. (flashcards can be found on this blog!)

Pajama Day Tomorrow

Mr. Lyons made an announcement this afternoon after the kindergarteners had gone home.

Students are welcome to wear pajamas to school tomorrow, Friday, February 13.  The student government was able to raise $$to use towards the purchase of many Pillow Pets to be donated to patients at Children's Hospital.  Pajama day is offered as a way to recognize everyone's accomplishment.

Sweet celebration!

Thank you!

Our Valentine's celebration sure was special today.  Thank you for helping by filling our bags.  The highlight was everyone reading their special notes from home.  Faces lit up as they read through your messages.

Valentine exchange

We loved reading our mail!

Writing and exchanging valentine messages is a great, fun way to reinforce many of our early literacy skills.  Students have worked hard to prepare their message and enjoyed reading them this afternoon.  Valentine's went home in a special pouch.  Our mailboxes will stay at school as the post office will remain open for a little while longer.

Mrs Fallon!

Mrs. Fallon has been helping us with many projects and activities!

You may be wondering, who is Mrs. Fallon?  She has been a guest teacher in our room this week.  Mrs. Fallon is a retired kindergarten teacher and a welcome addition to our class and routine!  She is on-call to support Pine Glen and provides teacher coverage as a substitute for as needed.

Valentine Exchange

Listening to the forecast it looks like snow could impact our school day on Friday.  We do not want to miss out on our Valentine exchange or mini celebration.  Therefore, we are moving everything up a day to Thursday.  Please send in valentines tomorrow (Wednesday, February 11) so we may deliver them to the appropriate mailboxes.  Please send in the "Party in a Bag" on Thursday.

Room 101's Post Office is Open for Business!

During the month of February we will be operating our Room 101 post office.  Students are encouraged to practice their  skills by writing letters to one another.  It is great fun!
First letters are being written to classmates.
Decorated gift bags are serving as our mailboxes.

Reminder

Secret Valentines will be exchanged on Friday, February 6.    Please help your child to complete this project and bring it to school on Thursday or Friday.

Remind them that it is a secret and not to talk about it with friends.

No Aquarium Trip Tomorrow

Hello Parents-

Due to the snow storm today and the Patriots Parade in Boston tomorrow we will be canceling our trip to the New England Aquarium tomorrow.  We hope to reschedule the trip at a later date.  At this point we have no information about how the snow will impact the school day tomorrow.  If there is school or a delay we will be at Pine Glen.  We will be celebrating Ground Hog Day a day late.  We are sure you guessed it, the ground hog saw his shadow and we will have 6 more weeks of winter!

Please remember to help you child complete their "Special Valentine".  These secret projects are due this Friday, February 6th.  Friday is also our Victorian Luncheon and we will be "dressing up" for this special occasion.

As always thanks for your continued support.  Stay safe in all the snow.  Today is a great day to read a book and practice your flashcard words and addition facts!
