Highlights of the Week of March 21st

This week we were busy as usual in Room 101. On Monday we "Rocked Our Socks" for Down Syndrome Awareness. We also learned about Autism Awareness and created our giant puzzle piece for our classroom. Every classroom at Pine Glen created a puzzle piece and these pieces will go together so we can see that we all FIT together. Autumn's dad was our parent volunteer and he assisted the students with our letter writing and dictionaries. Mrs. Parnell was out sick and Mrs. B came in to help in the morning. She read a Let's Find Out about friendship. Mrs. Kearney worked with the students on Topic 11 in math Numbers to 100.

On Tuesday, Madelyn's dad came in to help us! We Started a new book study. We are spending our reading group time reading The Big Umbrella by Amy June Bates. We previewed new vocabulary that would be in the book. We used Elkonin boxes to break down the sounds in the new words. Then we read the book and did a sequencing activity with a top down web. Students had to put pictures of the book in the correct category. Students had to sort the pictures into events that happened from the beginning, middle or end of the book. We then had a discussion about The Big Umbrella and talked about characteristics of the Big Umbrella in the story.

In Math we played a 100 chart game. We wrote in some numbers on the 100 chart then we rolled dice and put them together to create a two digit number then wrote them on our 100 chart. Then Mrs. Fortunato came in and taught us two more math games.

On Wednesday, we continued our book study. We read The Big Umbrella again and then the students chose a picture from the beginning, middle and end of the book and wrote about the pictures that were chosen. The the students then put together a scrambled sentence about the umbrella. We continued our work with our capital letters and dictionary and we color mixed with paints. We are experts at color mixing now! We had our Topic 11 math test and had a practice test on our number words zero to ten. We had four students out with the stomach bug, so please watch your children and if they don't feel well, please evaluate them to ensure they are well enough to come to school.

On Thursday we continued our book study with The Big Umbrella. The students used two column notes to organize their thoughts and then drew and wrote about the umbrella they would design. We worked on letter Xx on our boards and in our Student Notebooks and we did the letter Yy dictionary page. We water colored more spring flowers for our bulletin board. We worked on our cvc words, by cracking eggs and reading, tapping and recording the word on the egg paper. The students enjoyed this center! We also had indoor recess due to the rain. The students enjoyed using our indoor centers.

On Friday we welcomed parents in for our Buddy Reading. Thank you to Mrs. Schmaelzle, Mrs. Burke, Mrs. Andersen and Mrs. Gillis for reading with us. Mrs. Gillis stayed the morning and helped us with our dictionaries, the letter Yy and making our hatching chick art project. We played two vowel games and started Topic 12 in Math- Identify and Describe Shapes. We had our whole school reward and played Bingo in the cafeteria with our 4th grade partners.
