This Weeks Highlights December 14-18

 This weeks highlights:

We were in school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week. We finished our Holiday study and we put the finishing touches on our giant candles and holiday cards. We collaborated from a far and created a giant evergreen tree to hang in the hall with the snowflakes we will cut on Monday. We will learn that all snowflakes are unique just like we are!

We also competed a mini-unit on the book The Mitten by Jan Brett. Watch for materials being sent home on Monday for our newest retell challenge on  Then Mitten and we read different versions of the Gingerbread Man. We compared and contrasted these stories and we even created alternate endings for the book.

We had a snow day on Thursday with the storm that dumped over a foot of snow on Burlington. Due to the difficult clean up, we had our 6 remote learning day of the year. Thank you parents for your support and and another successful remote day is now in the books. The students did an amazing job and they all earned a prize that will be collected on Monday morning. We focused on a letter review, worked on our Heggerty program and the rest of our day we worked on The Mitten and Gingerbread activities. Thank you to Ms. Pavlicek for sharing her Wild Wednesday with us. We enjoyed learning more about The Mitten and the only animal, the hedgehog the only animal in the book that does not live in North America.

We met Rascal the African Pygmy Hedgehog. He was so cute. If you are interested in watching this educational program again please use this link. Please take a look at some of the gingerbread activities we did on Seesaw on our remote day today. The kindergartners are so impressive! We also worked together to roll and write the gingerbread game. The students needed to work together and we had to add the total of two dice being rolled in our own homes. After we added the two numbers together the students then practiced writing the numerals as Mrs. Panell filled out the game board. It was interesting to see that #5 came in first and #6 came in 2nd place. We said it must be because all our awesome students are 5 and 6 years old! Have a great weekend! Three more days until our December break.

Winter Holidays

This week we learned about some of the Winter Holidays. We read, researched and created our two column notes about Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. We also created crafts to go along with these holidays. We learned that these holiday celebrations all had a lot in common including, spending time with family, exchanging gifts, delicious foods, new clothes, decorating, games, singing and light- all the holidays had some type of candle or light associated with it- Diya for Diwali, Menorah for Hanukkah, Candles for Christmas and the Kinara for Kwanzaa. We used a lot of fine motor this week to be able to add all the details to our crafts. We did a lot of cutting, coloring, painting, sand, glitter and pasta work this week. (None of which could be done during our remote week. We are all SO HAPPY to be back in school!)

Diwali- we created Rangoli- sand art and glitter fireworks.

Hanukkah- We made dotted dreidels and menorahs (candle holder)

Christmas- We made light bulb patterns, Christmas Trees and giant candles.

Kwanzaa- we made corn (Muhindi- one for each child in the family) and Kinaras (candle holder).

We also prepared our giant holiday goody bags to put all the materials we are creating along with some special gifts. These special goody bags will come home next Friday. We hope you take the time to look through and learn about all the items contained in the bag! We also worked on our macaroni stars.
