Ms. Zanotti's Blog!

Parents and students have shared that they enjoy the online resources for math practice(Symphony) and reading(Raz-Kids).  Mrs. Parnell was looking into other tools to share and found a post on another blog that families might find useful. This link to a blog post will lead you to a recommendation for five options to help learn sight words in addition to the practice tool for sight words and math facts link on this blog!

Room 101's Post Office is Open!

On Friday we opened the Room 101 Post Office. Last week each child made their own mailbox. The classroom was rearranged a bit to accommodate this new space. All the students appeared to enjoy this new area! We look forward to mailing and reading lots of letters in our classroom.

We Made Quilts

We finished our individual paper quilts this past week. The class was split into four groups and each group worked on one group members quilt each time we worked on quilts. The groups worked together and the end products came out great! These paper quilts will be displayed in the hallway for a few weeks then they will be sent home with the students.

We had a busy Friday!

We worked very hard today! We worked on our letter boards and tapped CVC words. We highlighted and we were word detectives with our Kindergarten news. We finished our 100 sticker crown. Worked on our teen number counting sheets and we looked for number patterns in math. We shared and measured a special item and the whole school danced the Whip and Nae Nae dance as a reward for every grade level earning at least 50 Hoot Cards each!

The Mitten

This week we read the story The Mitten by Jan Brett. We created our own mittens with the story animals to put in it. We then went over what animal families the animals belong to talked about which animal isn't native to North America- the hedgehog! Miss Pavilcek from the science center came to our classroom and talked about the animals in the mitten but focused on the hedgehog. The science center has two hedgehogs, Penny, a Cinnamon Hedgehog and Pearl, a Snowflake Hedgehog. The students learned about three ways the hedgehogs use to protect themselves. They curl up, they have 7000 quills that are hard and sharp and they make a sniffling noise. The hedgehogs walked around their portable pen and students were able to touch Penny to see how her quills felt. At the end of the show the students pretended to be hedgehogs.

Blankets, Quilts, & Afghans... Oh My

Winter is here and we are sharing special blankets, quilts and afghans that have special meaning to us this month at school. We are playing a 20 question game to find out about each day's special item and we are practicing our oral language skills by posing complete questions about what the special item may look like. After the game, the item is reveiled. We then move on to practicing our math skills and measuring the item finding the length, width and area of the item. We are also comparing and contrasting these items and noting similarities and differences. We have enjoyed this process this week. Each student is anxiously awaiting their turn. We will also be creating special paper quilts for our classmates this month!
