Snow people Glyphs

Last week and today we worked on creating snow people glyphs with Mrs. A. Last week Mrs. A came into our classroom and read the Snowman by Raymond Briggs. She then explained to the students that they would create their own snow person based on a rubric.

Mrs. A then came back to our room this morning and the students wrote about their snow person. Then we had a math lesson this afternoon comparing and contrasting the snow person characteristics. We will be making a bar graph with this information so the students can visually see the comparisons.

Polar Express Day

Yesterday the Pine Glen Kindergarten had Polar Express Day. We all wore our pajamas to school, stuffed animal friends joined us too. Mr. Lyons read the Polar Express book to us in the cafeteria then we bought snacks and drinks from the cafe kitchen. We also had hot chocolate! Then we did special crafts in our classroom and watched part of the Polar Express movie. Every student left with a bell! We had a GREAT DAY!

Hour of Code

We went to the computer lab yesterday to participate in the hour of code. Mrs. A. explained that coding is following a particular order! We completed 12 different puzzles then we helped the angry bird get to the green pig by using direction commands in the correct order.

This was challenging for some and easy for others. It was a positive experience for all. Thanks Mrs. A!

There were so many schools around the workd participating in hour of code!

We got certificates for completing the hour of code. We all were so proud!

Teen Numbers!

We have been learning and practicing counting and showing our number sense for the teen numbers. Teen numbers can be challenging for kindergartners. Practicing counting and showing items for the particular number at home will be helpful for reinforcement!

We played teen number bingo and we matched the numbers to ten frames this week.

We learned about Diwali

Today we read a book about Diwali. We made tea light diyas and sand rangoli. We also started a new book about holidays. We will be comparing and contrasting the different holidays to see what things are similar and what is different about the holidays. We will learn about Diwali, Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa.

We also did our first writing on the Mystery Stocking and we did the last page of our Nutcracker book.

Nutcracker Dancing!

We resumed our Nutcracker dancing today. Room 103 joined us again today. All kindergartners are doing a great job learning all the Kingdom of the Sweets dances.

 

We were all tired and hot by the end of the 30 minute dance session. 

Preparing for the Nutcracker

We have been working on our Nutcracker books for over a week now. This week we read a few versions of the Nutcracker and compared and contrasted the similarities and differences.

 We also started learning our own dances to Act 2 delicacies. So far we have learned Spanish Chocolates, Arabian Coffee, Chinese Tea and Russian Peppermints! Be sure to ask your child how to do these dances!

During morning meeting this week I showed the students my collection of Nutcrackers and finger puppets. The students loved seeing the different nutcrackers and how they worked. The collection has been out for the students to explore during our work board time.

We are almost ready for our field trip next Thursday. Next week we complete our Nutcracker  books and finish learning our dances.  We will also talk about appropriate theater etiquette and how we should be "dressed up" and on our best behavior for our theater experience. It is a privilege for us to attend the ballet. We are looking forward to a wonderful experience.
