World Cerebral Palsy (CP) Day is Friday October 6, 2017. More than just an awareness day, it is an opportunity to Celebrate and express pride in the lives and achievements of those with CP and the people and the organizations that support them!

Students are invited to wear green on Friday October 6th to celebrate!

Red Sox Day at Pine Glen

Students are invited to wear Red Sox or red, white and blue clothes on Thursday, October 5th, to school to show our support for the Red Sox!

Estimating

This week we introduced estimating. We have asked the students to estimate or to make a good guess as to how many seeds are in the different kinds of apples we have been learning about. This week we estimated how many seeds were in the Red Delicious and Granny Smith apples. We were surprised to see that there were 8 seeds in both of these apples! Below see pictures of the students demonstrating what we do for estimates that are to high, to low and an accurate guess or "right on the nose."  We also saw the shape in the middle of the cut apple- a star!

Birthday Posters and Labeling

This week Sebastian celebrated his birthday in school. His mom dropped off his birthday poster and it was a big hit in the class. Families are welcome to participate in this optional birthday poster project. Information was given out during our kindergarten orientation.  In class the student shares the birthday poster then we sing to the birthday student, and give them a birthday crown, a bookmark, a certificate and a Pete the Cat book.

We started thinking about labeling and why it is important. We played a game with environmental text- MacDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Market Basket, Toys R Us, Showcase Cinema and Simonds Park to name a few. The students were able to identify these places just by seeing the sign or label! Then we had a discussion about why it is important to label things. We came up with many reasons, to know where we need to go, to recognize where we are, etc. The students had fun with this game. We then move on to labeling a classmate. Students all took turns taking a label and placing it on our birthday boy volunteer. The next thing we did was label important things in our classroom. When you are in Room 101 be sure to check out all our labels. Next week we will be labeling the creepy crawly animals that will be visiting our classroom from the Science Center.

Highlight of the Week

Congratulations to the 8 students in our class who did the challenge homework this week. Remember the students are invited to participate in the Highlight of the Week page in the back of the news. Students are suppose to adhere to the journal expectations from kindergarten. Students should reflect on our week at school, rereading the Kindergarten News may be a helpful tool if your child cannot remember what we did in school that week. Then your child should draw a picture of their highlight. There should be 5 colors in the illustration if your child is 5, 6 colors in the illustration if your child is 6. Then we are asking that your child try to write a sentence to describe their illustration. We ask that the child just try to write down the sounds that they hear in each word. An adult can write the sentence on the back of the highlight page to clarify the sentence. We are looking forward to seeing more highlight pages. Great work Room 101 students!

We had a SUCCESSFUL Week 3!

We had a successful week 3. All students are doing well in kindergarten and we are exploring new things in the classroom and learning about new things in the classroom. We are always BUSY in Room 101.
