Beatrix Potter's Nursery is open!

Students were introduced to Beatrix Potter's nursery today.  We discussed how the artist/author/illustrator loved to draw/sketch and paint little animals.  Our class pets; Gus and Hermie will be the subjects of today's paintings.  We are expecting a special delivery from the science center tomorrow to enhance the nursery's offerings!

Terrific Thursday

We had a terrific Thursday morning!  Room 101 friends were busy and focused.  As you can see from the photos, we accomplished quite a bit.  Actually, these photos are reflective of a typical morning at school.........117 days of kindergarten and we are doing great!

We built CVC words using letter tiles.  The words have to match the pictures on the page.

Mrs. Berry was in today and helped friends working on counting on from 10 and 20  with dimes and pennies!

Mrs. Horton did some review of fundations with one group and then took another group to practice math skills!

We are so lucky to have many teachers, working in various capacities, but always will to jump in and work with smaller groups!

Pine Glen Carnival March 28

Come join us this Saturday for the Pine Glen Carnival!!  Festivities start 9am and continue until 2pm.

Rock climbing - think before you move

Thank you Ms. Govoni!

This afternoon P.E. teacher, Ms. Govoni spent some time with us introducing us the rock climbing wall.  It was a special treat as this is an activity typically reserved for the bigger kids at Pine Glen.  The wall was installed as part of a grant given by the Burlington Education Foundation a few years ago.

There are many guidelines and rules that we adhere to in order to ensure that all are safe.  All kindergarteners were challenged to cross the wall only using the green hand and foot grasps.  It sure was tricky.  As students made their way across the wall they had to think of each move and look ahead to the impact of where they go will be as they need to make sure they can reach the next step.  As we discussed it was physically active brainteaser..........like being submerged in one of the coding activities we did last month!

Today was a green-filled day.  The entire school wore green to show Pine Glen pride!

We watched an introductory performance of the high school musical which opens on Friday evening.

Paddy the leprechaun left us more treasures.  We did a few St. Patrick projects.........writing about why we are lucky, reading our books about where the leprechauns are, colored and read another leprechaun book, graphed about our treasures and even did some public speaking.

Be sure to see other blog entries posted earlier today.  Each of us took the microphone and shared our leprechaun creations.  We made leprechauns on the ipad, wrote about them and then read our presentations. Mrs. Parnell and Mrs. Hoyt were very impressed and we hope you will be too!

Paddy the leprechaun brought us more treasure today!

It ain't no blarney!  Paddy the Leprechaun visited room 101 quite a few times over the last week.  Today we were thrilled by the treasure he delivered: hats and stickers!

Rainbow Fish introduces our math lesson

Rainbow Fish!

Rainbow fish introduces our math lesson.  Today we looked at full 10 frames and discussed the many different combinations that make 10.  We noted the commutative property today.

3 + 7 = 10 but 7+3= 10 too!  If we move the parts around they still equal the same amount!

Mo Willems, Pigeon stories are always a big hit.  Today on our Friday visit to the library we listed to Pigeon tell us how much he loved puppies and desperately would like to have one.

Paddy the Leprechaun visited us!

I found a coin!

Students in room 101 have received notes and bits of treasure this week.  Paddy the Leprechaun said he would like to hide his treasure in a quiet classroom.  We have been trying very hard to create an inviting space for him.  This week we wrote him notes suggesting good hiding spots in our classroom.  He liked our suggestions and left bits of treasure throughout the classroom!

Congratulations and thank you!

The first graders have been working hard and filled a token jar.  Each time students are caught being good friends, working hard and doing the right thing the class earns tokens.  When the jar was filled the class as a whole earns a prize.  The first graders very generously decided to pass it forward to other and share their prize.  Each student selected a special eraser and then they visited us in room 101, presenting each kindergartener with a special gift!

Congratulations first grade on filling your jar and on being such generous friends!  Thank you for thinking of us!  It sure made us feel good to receive gifts!  We hope you felt just as good presenting them to us!

Let's find out about lost teeth

Today we read a Let's Find Out magazine about teeth.  Some of us have lost teeth and some have not.  We shared what it feels like to have wiggly teeth and how it feels when they come out.  We also discussed the importance of taking very good care of our teeth and what foods and snacks are better for keeping our teeth strong and healthy.

Combinations for 6 and 7

We started our day building combinations for 6 and 7.

There are many ways to make 6 and 7.  Using the connecting cubes we built each way.

Animal family and fish review

Sorting animals into animal families on the touch it board.

Raise your hand if you agree that it is a mammal.  

We spent some time reviewing the various characteristics of each animal family.  Then we sorted some animals.  Students are asked why they knew an animal belonged in a given family. 

Our trip to the New England Aquarium is next Tuesday and we are looking forward to seeing creatures from nearly all the animal families. 

Next we focused on the fish family for some review.  We labeled the parts of the fish we know and then wrote a journal entry about them.  We are ready for our trip!

Locate the Leprechaun

This week we had some discussions about leprechauns!  We are making about where leprechauns may be found.  UNDER a rainbow, ABOVE a rainbow, ON a pot of gold.  Next week will continue working on this book and discuss other words that describe location. 

In addition, Mrs. Parnell and Mrs. Hoyt shared that in years past a leprechaun has actually visited room 101! Since the leprechaun prefers to only visit the quietest of classrooms we are trying very hard to work quietly..........perhaps he will visit next week???!!!

100 Second Scribble!

Late this afternoon we tried a few exercises for 100 seconds.  The students highlight of the day was likely the 100 second scribble!  Mrs. Parnell and Mrs. Hoyt were partial to the 100 seconds of absolute silence.   100 seconds can seem like a long time!

100 collections

Sharing our 100 collections was fun!  Some of the collections looked so much bigger than others.  100 is a lot but the piles are all different sizes.  We had 100 pennies, 100 Legos, 100 hair elastics, 100 stickers, 100 gems, 100 cotton balls, 100 toothpicks, 100 beads.

Members of room 101 were asked to share what they brought and why.  We demonstrated that we can count to 100 when we counted out our piles.  Many of us found that it was much easier if we grouped the items into bunches of 10.
