Working Hard in Room 101!

This week was another busy week. We focused on a lot of different subject areas including; working on our Fundations Unit 2. We have been tapping words and working on writing our capital and lowercase letters. We have started individual dictionaries. We also learned about Martin Luther King Jr. We read a couple books about him, colored a book about him and read it in reading groups, and we did a Let's Find out that focused on him. We also reviewed the book we colored and added in transitional words about how to get dressed in the winter. We are hoping this will help our students (and us) when we need to get ready to go out to recess or go home. Knowing the order to most efficiently get dressed is a time saver and helps with students self help skills. (Coat, boots, hat, mittens, scarf). Going through the process of a procedural informative text will be helpful when the students write their procedural text for how to build a snow person. We hope the snow will stick around or we will get a bit more so we will be able to teach our 4th grade partners how to build a snowman- and actually spend time outside building based on the kindergartners directions! We also spent time this week with our 4th grade partners working on snowman glyphs. This exercise was practice to our instructional writing. The 4th graders went first and demonstrated how to make a snowman on the iPad using the Drawing Pad app.

We have been learning about fish and sea creatures to prepare us for our trip to the Aquarium! The students are looking forward to this trip. Mr. Musselman will come and do his Superfish show on Thursday morning. I'm sure we will wow him with our fish and sea creature knowledge.

We continued to work on Topic 6 in math; focusing on addition and word problems, and we reviewed our addition math facts.  Ms. Fallon, Pine Glen's Art teacher came in to read us a book about art, to get us ready for our art class next Monday. We will be creating a Square One Art project with her in the art room. This is a fundraiser through the PTO. More information on this will be sent home at a later date. Ms. Kendall, Pine Glen's Guidance Counselor came in on Friday afternoon and did a social skills lesson on blurting out and she read My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook, then she reinforced aspects of the book. She will be back in a couple weeks to build off this lesson.

We also went to the library and we had fun in the Maker Space this week.  We continued with our Blankets, Quilts and Afghans and 5 more students shared their special items.

Ask your child how Whisper Wednesday was! We have been a bit loud in room 101 since returning from break. We challenged the students to use on a whisper on Wednesday. Although this was challenging for some, all students were very successful! We filled our popcorn jar because everyone did such an amazing job. We will be voting on our reward and we communicate soon about what was chosen. Our morning message in Thursday asked if the students liked Whisper Wednesday and 10 said yes and 7 said no.
