April 23rd - Read Aloud- The Bad Seed

Today, Ms. Felton, 1st grade teacher from Memorial
shares the book The Bad Seed by Jory John. This is
the book you all received in your package yesterday!
This story is great for showing kids that your reputation
and past actions don’t make you who you are.  It is possible
to change but you’re not going to be good all the time. The
book also shows that your behavior is a decision that you make.
It’s also refreshingly honest in showing that some people will hold
your past actions against you and that the rest might not think
you’re immediately good, but maybe not all bad.

• SEED SORT: Give children a paper plate filled with different
types of seeds. Have them sort the seeds into groups and check
out the pictures attached to have the students label what kinds
of seed they have. Remember we are planing a rainbow with the
seed supplies in the delivery. Red- Zinnias, Orange- Marigolds,
Yellow- Sunflowers, Green- Basil, Blue- Bachelor Buttons, Purple-
Morning Glory. Which kind of seed has the most seeds?  Which one
has the least? Help children record their findings, after the seeds
grow see if every seed sprouted. Keep your record sheet to be able
to check your data later! Click here for seed and flower pictures.

• CAN YOU HELP?: After reading the story, think about why the
main character became a “bad seed.” What happened to him? How
do you think he felt when he heard others call him a “bad seed”?
How could the others have helped him instead? Do you know someone
who is like this character? How can you help that person?

• THE GOOD AND THE BAD: Discuss how, although the main
character called himself a “bad seed,” truthfully everyone has both
good and bad days. Have children fold a piece of paper in half and
label one side “Good” and the other “Bad.” Then ask them to write
and illustrate something “good” that they do (e.g., doing their homework,
cheering up a friend, or helping to feed the baby) and something “bad”
(e.g., fighting with a sibling, not cleaning up a mess, or having a tantrum).
Discuss how they should strive to do more good than bad!  Printable pdf
