Highlights of the Week of December 13th

The students are getting excited about the winter break! We are trying to plan activities that involve some movement due to the extra excitement and energy the students are possessing! We finished and read our holiday book. We made painted snowflakes on the giant tree and we made our own snowflakes to display around the tree on the bulletin board in the hallway. We also read an emergent reader about Holidays Around the World. We finished Topic 6 in math and had our assessment and we started Topic 7. Topic 7 is an introduction to subtraction. We wrote about what was inside the mystery box and stocking and students went home with the items that were the mystery. A crazy straw, striped straw, build your own snow people stickers, snowflake pencils and erasers were all sent in by parents and the students enjoyed feeling the stockings, guessing what was in them and then wrote about what they thought was in it and why they thought that. We had some very good guesses! We did a new yarn greeting at morning meeting to show that we are all connected and if someone breaks the web the class connection is lost, and we need to work together to be a classroom family. We also played a snow ball toss game for our morning meeting activity. All students enjoyed both these activities. We read a Let's Find Out about holiday traditions. We also read many gingerbread stories and made our own gingerbread.
