Highlight of the Week of January 31st

On Monday we had our Shark and Superfish Day. Please see other post about this. We also completed our January Reading Challenge and red to a stuffed sea creature. The bag of books sponsored for our reading challenge by Mr. & Mrs. Coady (Mrs. Hoyt's parents was sent home. If you want to have your child practice writing a thank you note can be sent to them. Their address was sent home in the communication folder). We also had indoor recess due to the cold temperature. We were able to open some of stations during recess. The students enjoyed talking and playing blocks, geobands, pegs and duplo legos together. The recess flew by!

On Tuesday we celebrated Tet- Vietnamese Lunar New Year. Finn modeled the traditional Tet clothing. We learned that it is the year of the Tiger. Our students born in the year of 2015 are the year of the goat and students born in the year of 2016 were the year of the monkey. We read a couple books on Lunar New Year and played Lunar New Year bingo. Finn and his family sent in traditional red envelopes for the class containing festive stickers. Usually these envelopes contain money. Finn's family shared some photographs and the students saw photos of a Lunar New Year table with the flowers and fruits,  rice cake/ bánh chưng, Bánh tét,  Bánh ích, Apricot blossom tree called " Hoa Mai" and a cherry blossom tree called " hoa đào ". We also recorded our Book Commercials with Mrs. Ardizzoni. Be on the lookout for a post soon containing a YouTube video of our Book Sells. Mrs. Fortunato came in to read the math book The Greedy Triangle and then she challenged us to make triangles with pattern blocks. This was a bit challenging but ended up being FUN!

On Wednesday it was Groundhog day and we learned that Puxatauny Phil saw his shadow and there will be six more weeks of winter. We also celebrated Global Play Day and had a lot of fun playing together!

On Thursday we got bask to the basics after a few days of active and engaging activities. We worked on our Greeting Card books, dictionaries, Heggerty, Fundations and Math.
