Highlights from the week of November 1st

Monday was the day after Halloween and we needed some time to adjust from being out late and eating too much sugar. Students were allowed to wear their pajamas to school and we started our day with reading in the cafeteria with our 4th grade partners using flashlights! So much fun. Then we did some work in the classroom and had recess and lunch. Next Mr. Musselman from the Burlington Science Center came to Pine Glen and did the Magnet Show for us. He was impress with the kindergartners knowledge about magnets. Great job kindergartners! After the Magnet show we went to music and then did Heggerty and then laid out the candy count slips. Some of our kindergartners have a TON of candy. The most being 275 pieces. Oh my!

Tuesday we focused on Fundations review, sight word review, comparing groups to 10, Heggerty, working on our vegetable and Thanks A Lot books and we had a candy corn letter hunt. This was so much fun. The students enjoyed being up from their seats and hunting for the 26 lowercase letters, then recording the letters they found.

Mr. Musselman came back to Pine Glen again on Tuesday, this time wearing his Social Studies curriculum hat and he introduced the holiday Dia de los Muertos to us and talked about where and how this holiday is celebrated around the world and then he read the book Just a Minute: A Trickster Tale and Counting Book. The students had a good conversation with Mr. Musselman about holidays and how we all celebrate different things.

On Wednesday we read a couple more sight word readers and we started to learn about personal narratives. Please be sure to look in communication folders on Friday. There is a packet of information that we are hoping parents will assist us with. We will be starting our first big writing unit on Monday, November 15th focusing on personal narratives and we need parent help with creating graphic organizers and finding/creating photos that show a beginning, middle and end that your child will be able to write about in class. Thank you in advance for your help. We also started learning our Thanksgiving songs that we hope to be able to sing with the kindergartners in Room 102 and 103. These songs will also be in the communication folder on Friday.

We started eating in the cafeteria on Thursday. This is a new adventure for us. The kindergartners handled this change well. We have been impressed with their adaptability. We also had to change our lunch and recess times. We will now eat in the cafeteria at 10:30 and have recess at 11:00 with the Pine Glen first graders. Students are sitting every other seat in the cafeteria and they have assigned seats for lunch.

On Friday we worked on our journals, vegetable books and our Thanks A Lot books. We learned about the letter o and we searched for acorn letters and played roll and record on the cornucopia for numbers 1-6. We also had a guidance lesson with Ms. Kendall. We are learning about feelings and how to manage them.
