Highlights of the Week of May 16th

Monday was the hottest day at school so far this year. All the students were HOT at recess. Please remember that we plan to be outside for our 25 minute recess daily, even when it is hot outside. If you think your child needs it please apply sunscreen before school. Most students found shade on the playground and relaxed instead of running a lot at recess on Monday. We also looked at some of Miss L.'s prom photos from the BHS Senior Prom that was held on Friday night. The students had lots of questions for Miss L and they thought she looked beautiful in her gown. We also opened our Discover Centers and had some time to play Monday afternoon.

First thing on Tuesday morning, the students planted a couple sunflowers each with Miss L. These sunflowers are for the Science Center growing contest. After the sunflowers sprout at school, they will be sent home for your child to continue to take care of these sunflowers and hopefully we will have a contest winner!

We also worked with our 4th grade partners and the students recorded their animal research projects. All kindergartners and 4th graders were in the K classrooms taking turns recording their reports. While they waited they practiced their scripts, worked on animal papers from the Franklin Park Zoo, watched Wild Krats, participated in animal guided draws or played board games with their partners. Our Luna Moth hatched on Monday and we let it go on Tuesday. The students were amazed that the moth had hatched from a cocoon that looked like a leaf. As we let the moth go, the students posed for a photo with it. Some students were afraid of the moth, but realized it would not hurt them.

On Wednesday we worked hard on our Fundations. We practiced sentence dictation. The students worked on sentence conventions (capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and for proper nouns, spaces between words and including punctuation at the end), along with tapping out words, and remembering to use digraphs when needed.

On Thursday, our 4th grade partners came down and Scholastic had sponsored a book for all the Kindergarten and 4th graders- What If You Had Animal Teeth by Sandra Markle. The 4th graders read the book to their K partner and then they discussed what animal teeth they would like to have. Pictures were drawn of what they would look like with these teeth and then they wrote about why they chose those animal teeth. These books were sent home today as a reward for doing such a wonderful job on their animal research projects. We are getting excited about our field trip next Thursday!
