This week we completed another kindergarten book study. We have been focusing on the book The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland. The Very Cranky Bear is about Four friends (Zebra, Moose, Lion, and Sheep) try to take shelter in a cave on a rainy day. A very cranky bear ROARS because he is trying to sleep. The other animals try to come up with ways to cheer up the Bear. Moose finds antlers for him, Lion gives him a mane, and Zebra paints on stripes. Finally, Sheep uses her wool to make Bear a comfortable pillow for his head. The Very Cranky Bear is a fun text that is full of rhyme.
The comprehension strategies we used for this book included prediction and vocabulary, beginning, middle and end, and problem solution. We did a journal entry about what makes us cranky and we talked about what makes us feel better when are are cranky. We found rhymes and learned about shades of meaning for the word cranky. We also talked about the character in the book who was helpful. Discussed how the animal was helpful and added how students are helpful to each other and at home.
This week we started learning about plants and what they need to survive. On Monday, we planted our own rainbow of flower seeds. We are hoping to sow our seeds and have beautiful flowers soon. We will be tracking how our seed development through a science observation journal. We have been watering our seeds, and have them on the windowsill to get sunlight. We are hoping to notice some changes soon! Stay tuned for updates!
We started our week with a long morning meeting catching up with each other on all the vacation happenings. We also planed our seeds, worked on our shapes, and started our The Very Cranky Bear book study. On Tuesday, author Melissa Stewart came to Pine Glen and we learned more about her writing process and she shared a few of her books with us. On Wednesday, Mrs. B was in to help us with our writing, Mrs. Gentry helped us with our Planting a Rainbow books, End of the Year books, and our flower labeling table. On Thursday we met with our 4th grade partners to start our animal research projects. We also went to a preview of the Addams Family preformed by Burlington High School. The play will run this weekend April 28 & 29 at 7:30 pm and next weekend May 5 & 6 at 7:30 pm and May 7 at 2:00 pm. We also worked on sentence dictation on Friday! This was challenging but fun!
