Fabulous Week 2!

Our second week was another success. We are so proud of our kindergartners. They are working so hard and learning so much! Everyone is very excited that the iPads went home today! We have been learning and practicing how to access some of the kindergarten apps at school with the hopes that some practice can also be done at home. Please be sure to read the information packet sent home in the green communication folder. If there are any questions please let us know.

Last week we learned about Drawing Pad and ST Math.  Drawing Pad is a art tool that the students have been happy to use. To introduce all the tools we had a few guided lessons and then we did a guided draw and created an owl. The next app we learned was ST Math. The students need to help JiJi the penguin get across the screen by solving math problems (with no words!) So far this program has been enjoyed by the students. Please be sure to have the students work on these applications themselves!

This week we introduced Lexia, Dexteria and Raz Kids. Lexia is a phonics program, and the students progress through the levels at their own pace. Again, please make sure your child is doing this work on their own! Dexteria is a fine motor app and the students practice tapping, pinching and writing letters and numbers. Raz Kids is an incentive reading program. In this program the students can listen to books or read them themselves and earn stars that can be used to create their own Avatar, or decorate their own rocket or they can donate them to others that are in need of food.

We also completed and published our first book on colors. This book went home yesterday. We hope your child was excited to share it with you.

We also read the story Wemberly Worried and we have been playing bingo and practicing some phonemic awareness skills with this book. Soon the Phonemic Awareness take home bag will come home so these skills can be practiced at home.

We also started practicing writing our numbers, our one to one correspondence, making sets and subitizing.

We also designed the cover to our Writing folders. We will start Writers Workshop next week!

We shared all of our All About Me posters and they are now hanging up in the hall over our drying spots. It was so nice to get to know more about all of our Room 101 members.

We have been practicing our names all week. Today we painted our names with a q-tip to also practice our fine motor skills.

We have been so fortunate that the weather has  been so nice and we have been able to enjoy our mask break, snack and Morning Meeting outside. Then we head to the playground for a short recess. This has become a favorite part of our kindergarten day!

We Are 3 Little Pigs Experts

We have completed our mini unit on the 3 Little Pigs. We have read many different versions of the story. We have compared and contrasted the similarities and differences in the books and are 3 Little Pig Experts!

We made the Little Pig’s houses and character stick puppets. We will be encouraging students to have a puppet show and retell the 3 Little Pigs story to their families. Students love doing this!  We have also included a special character in case your child would like to tell the story twice!  (Once in a traditional manner and once by creatively incorporating themselves into the story!)

Free photo: Piglet, Angler Saddleback, Kissing - Free Image on ...In past years, families video recorded their child’s efforts and emailed the videos to me at parnell@bpsk12.org.  We shared the videos in class and posted them on the blog for all to see.  We’d love to see how your children retell the story of the 3 Little Pigs and are hoping to have all our students participate in this activity again this year!  If you decide to participate and share, please send your videos by

Friday, October 2nd.

We can’t wait to see the videos!

Terrific First Week!

We had a successful first week of kindergarten! We have started to establish our classroom routines and have explored so many things in kindergarten. Due to the pandemic, the students have a lot of individual supplies to keep track of and we have been working on organizational skills with them to assist them in creating a work space that is conducive to help them achieve their best learning. Having desks in kindergarten is definitely a new concept for ALL of us but we are all getting adjusted to this new normal.

Mrs. Kearney has been doing a wonderful job posting pictures and quick videos on our class Instagram account @pgkinder101. Please join our class so you can see these quick snapshots of our day.

We all had a busy week in Room 101, hopefully some extra sleep can be caught up on over the weekend so we are all at our best to start our learning back up again on Monday!

Please check folders daily. This week we sent home our class list, our September Newsletter and a First Week update.
