Fabulous Friday

We had a great day. Before lunch we Dropped Everything and Read with our 4th grade partners. Mrs. Visocchi's class came to Room 101. The kindergartners and the fourth graders partnered up and took turns reading to each other in the dark using flashlights!!! We had a lot of fun together doing this reading activity!

After lunch Connor's mom came in and spoke to us about her Community Helper job. She is a Dental Hygeinist. Mrs. McElroy was a wonderful guest. She did a great job telling us about her job. She taught us how to take better care of our teeth. She demonstrated how to brush your teeth the correct way and how to floss. She also played a game with us and gave all the students a goody bag with their own new Minions toothbrush, floss and a coloring sheet. Thank you for teaching us about your job!

4th and 5th Grade Spring Concert

On Wednesday, we attended the 4th and 5th graders spring concert. The 4th and 5th graders put in a wonderful show and the kindergartners were a great audience! They were safe, appropriate, and kind during the duration of the show. Mr. Lyons, Asst. Superintendent Larkin and Superintendent Dr. Conti were all very impressed and each grade level earned 4 Hoot Cards!

Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser

Cystic Fibrosis Wristband Fundraiser
IMG_7111.JPG

Student Council is sponsoring this event to support a close friend of one of our students who is affected by this disease.  Bianca Algeri is a seventeen year old girl who was born with Cystic Fibrosis.  She  has formed her own organization, Bianca’s Angels, that helps support research for this disease.

To support this cause, we are selling purple wristbands that students can buy from their homeroom teacher.

Where can you buy them?

Students can get wristbands from their homeroom teacher for the month of May. Each wristband is $2.  All funds will be donated to Bianca’s Angels, so additional donations are welcome!

The Big Apple Circus

We have been learning about the 7 continents the circus performers are from along with the circus community and the different jobs the people who work at the circus do. We have completed our own circus book and created clown masks! This unit was a lot of fun culminating in our field trip to the Big Apple Circus today. We all enjoyed the day.

Mr. Musselman's Magnet Show!

On Wednesday, Mr. Musselman of the Burlington Science Center was in to visit the Kindergartners of Pine Glen and share with us his magnet program.  We learned how strong magnets can be and discussed many of their uses.  Magnets stick to metals like iron, cobalt and nickel.  Note: nickels only have a small amount of nickel in them (they are mostly copper), so magnets do not stick to them!  He showed us many different kinds of magnets and told us various stories about them.  Be sure to ask your children about the North and South pole of a magnet and have them use the new science words attract and repel! Mr. Musselman was impressed with the students knowledge of magnets. Way to go kindergartners!

New Animals are Visiting our Room

This morning Miss P. from the Burlington Science Center brought us new visiting animals for Beatrix Potters Nursery. The students were thrilled to meet Olive the rabbit and a baby turtle. She introduced the animals and allowed us to touch the animals if we wanted to.  She went over the animal characteristics for the reptile and mammal families.

The Science center has also sent over a lunar moth cocoon and caterpillars that we will observe as they go through metamorphisis. We also have tadpoles that we watched hatch from their eggs last Friday. We hope to observe the tadpoles as they change into frogs! Spring is a very busy time in kindergarten!

We Planted a Rainbow

The students in Room 101 planted a rainbow last week. We have been learning what is needed to care for living things. The students have been sowing their seeds and were thrilled to see spikes of green last Friday. The students learned that seeds need soils, water and light to help them grow. They also learned that vitamins and heat can also help seeds grow. We have been keeping a science observation journal and checking on our plants daily.

We have also been enjoying children's literature books about seeds. The class enjoyed The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle and Planting a Rainbow by Lois Elhert. The students are almost done with their own Planting a Rainbow book. We hope to send home the plants and book this Friday.
