Good Bye for Now - Summer Challenge!

Room 101 friends ready for First Grade!

We had a wonderful year in room 101 and are so lucky to have spent this time with our kindergarten friends.  Mrs. Parnell and Mrs. Hoyt know all our friends are going to do great in first grade.  Over the summer we will be working hard to prepare for next year, reading and relaxing with our families.  We encourage all of you to rest, relax, play and read all summer too!  Remember we encourage our students to keep a journal over the summer!

SUMMER CHALLENGE

Mrs. Parnell and Mrs. Hoyt would LOVE to read about all of our (now former) students summer adventures.  If students write at least once a week every week (at least 10 entries!) of the summer adhering to the kindergarten expectations- at least 3 sentences and an illustration with 6 colors a PRIZE will be earned!  Please have the students bring in their journal the first day of first grade- August 31, 2015.  We hope we will be reading LOTS of summer journals!

Students in the Burlington Public Schools have digital portfolios.  During the course of their 13 years in the System they will be adding samples of their work and accomplishments.   We are very proud of how each student has grown, writes so well and has found his/her voice.  These recordings along with an additional writing sample will be included as their first contributions to their portfolios.

For additional information on the digital portfolios see Mrs. Ardizzoni's post on the LTC blog.

Thank You Fourth Grade Friends

Kindergartners and Fourth Graders together for one last activity!

We had a great time collaborating with our Fourth Grade friends this year.  They helped us with our study of American Symbols, visited with us to celebrate reading and today we played name bingo!  It is great to have friends in the building to help us out.  We look forward to seeing everyone next year!

Water day

Although a bit chilly, we did have a wonderful first water day!

Bubbleology

We had a great presentation today by the bubble man.  He made bubbles of various shapes, sizes and colors!  When water day activities were introduced many of us were eager to try out our hand at making bubbles!

Pictures from the Bubble Guy!

Mr. Keith Michael Johnson, the Bubble Man visited Pine Glen to present an enrichment program this morning.  All students and teachers were captivated.

We Did a Great Job!

Help~Please return the RED Look How I Changed Book to school on Monday.  We would like to use it for a few more days.   Kindergarten students in Burlington will be creating digital portfolios and we would like to include samples from this book as it represents the tremendous growth your kindergartner achieved this year!

Flag Day Family Gathering

We had a full house!

Thank you for coming to visit room 101 today.  We hope you will agree that your children did a fabulous job singing for you and presenting their books!

In class on Monday we will be reflecting on our gathering.  We would love to share your feedback with students and also demonstrate how connected to the world we are.  If you or other family members(grandparents/aunties and uncles) around the globe view this, please comment and let us know.  We plan to plot the map locations of where the comments are coming from!..... Be sure to see the class slide show.  The link is listed as the first tab at the top of this blog.

Note: comments will not be posted live.  Teachers will moderate and and then post.  Thank you!

Building Structures - "This math was so fun!"

We used the smaller wooden cubes to make larger structures.  Our skyscrapers were quite tall.  It was fun to see how high we could build them before they toppled over!

Building 3D Shapes!

Today students applied their knowledge of shapes and applied it in creating their own 3-D shapes!

Not only did they build shapes, but they had to identify the shape they made and to tell some of the attributes such as how many corners and how many sides.

We had cubes and pyramids.  Some were creative and combined the cubes and pyramids!

Checkers!

We learned to play a Colonial Times game today.......checkers!
There is a lot of strategy involved with the game of checkers.

Is this a precursor to our modern day coding activities?  Players must think about their moves and strategize in order to be successful.
