The Mitten

This week we read the story The Mitten by Jan Brett. We created our own mittens with the story animals to put in it. We then went over what animal families the animals belong to talked about which animal isn't native to North America- the hedgehog! Miss Pavilcek from the science center came to our classroom and talked about the animals in the mitten but focused on the hedgehog. The science center has two hedgehogs, Penny, a Cinnamon Hedgehog and Pearl, a Snowflake Hedgehog. The students learned about three ways the hedgehogs use to protect themselves. They curl up, they have 7000 quills that are hard and sharp and they make a sniffling noise. The hedgehogs walked around their portable pen and students were able to touch Penny to see how her quills felt. At the end of the show the students pretended to be hedgehogs.
