September Newsletter 2022

September Newsletter Kindergarten Room 101 Dear Parents, Kindergarten is off to a great start! We hope the couple days have gone well for parents and students alike. There are many ways you can contribute to your child’s success. 1- Check backpacks daily for notes and assignments. Weekly newsletters will be sent hopefully on Friday, (but I may need part of the weekend to complete it and email it out). Please check our classroom blog weekly. Monthly newsletters will be sent home each month. 2- Keep us informed of any changes or situations at home that may affect your child’s performance or behavior at school. It is essential that we be informed of anything that may be bothering your child so we can properly meet their needs during the day. 3- Set aside at least 10-15 minutes per night for reading with your child. For now you will be doing most of the reading, but as the year continues your child will be bringing home books and poems that they can read to you! See attached reading log. Please have your child color in an apple after reading each day and send the form back at the end of the month to earn a prize. 4- Encourage and support your child’s independence. All kindergarten students should be working on buttoning, zipping and tying. Their self-sufficiency is essential to maximizing our instructional time. Now is a great time to begin giving small chores to your child to build responsibility. This month in class we will be working on colors. Our first book will be Colorful Nursery Rhymes. We will learn to recite these poems. We will also be comparing a few versions of the story The Three Little Pigs. Most of all this month, we will be working on getting to know one another. Students will be concentrating on learning the class routine and schedule. Teachers will be focusing on assessing the students and helping them settle in. All in all, it promises to be a very busy month! In math this month we will begin by familiarizing ourselves with a variety of materials and manipulatives that will be the mainstay of our enVision math program. Mrs. Parnell and Mrs. Kearney will also introduce additional, interesting manipulatives! EnVision Math topic 1 Numbers 0-5 will be our first unit of study. Mrs. Fortunado, Burlington’s Math Coach will be in to help us learn about JiJi the penguin in our ST Math program. Arriving home weekly (when school is in for all five weekdays) will be our class news. Please read the news with your child and encourage them to answer the questions and do the activities in the news packet. We will be finding some high frequency words in the news. The Kindergarten News will be discussed in greater detail at our Open House on September 22nd. The class news provides the students with new and familiar text each week. This reinforces vocabulary we are using daily in class. It will also keep you informed about what we are doing weekly in the classroom. You do not need to return the news to class. We will try to maintain regular blog updates. We are looking forward to working closely with you and your child. Together, we know we can have a great kindergarten year! Sincerely, Melissa Parnell & Kathleen Kearney
