Eggs to Chicks - It was quite a WEEK!

On Monday afternoon Ms. Pavlicek came and put 7 eggs into our incubator. She had been caring for them in a giant incubator at the science center for 19 days. This meant that the chicks should hatch by Wendesday (@21 days). We were surpirsed when 3 had hatched by Wednesday afternoon. Then we had two more hatch by Thursday morning. Two of our eggs were not viable and did not hatch. We have 3 girls and two boy chicks. The students have been so excited by this process. Thier observation journals are very detailed to document all the growth and changes the eggs have gone through to become chicks and how quickly the chicks are growing! We had morning meeting with the chicks this morning and all the students held them (or chose not to but posed with them). The chicks were a bit unpredictable and a couple of them escaped our circle, which added to the excitement but all were safe in the brooder box at the end of our meeting and we all took a walk to the bathrooms to wash our hands. We cannot get enough of the chicks and I'm sure the students will be sad when they leave on Wednesday.
