April 16 - Read Aloud - Try A Little Kindness

Today’s read aloud is read by Ms. Cacciola one of
Pine Glen’s reading tutors. She shares the story
Try a Little Kindness by Henry Cole. In the book,
the big friendly bear does lots of kind deeds for his
friends. From holding the door for a friend to being
the last in line. These small acts can make a big
difference. Use it as a starting point to think of some
other ideas with your little one on kind things you can
do for your friends and family this week as well as
strangers and the wider community.

KINDNESS TO WILDLIFE

Why not make some extra effort to provide a little extra
food for the wildlife around your home.

SENDING KINDNESS TO THE COMMUNITY

Send postcards to the community. Hone your writing
and drawing skills and make your own cards to send to
your friends, family or people in the community that could
use a pick me up during these isolating times.

BEING KIND TO OTHERS

Thinking of others and being kind to them is great for kids.
A really nice way to do this is to make cookies and deliver
them or if this isn’t possible maybe the cookies become
dessert for the family dinner. The mathematical skills
practiced in cooking are great skills to practice when we
are at home. You could try this recipe.

Rainbow Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened to cool room temp (see note)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract optional
  • 3/4 cup sprinkles

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets
with parchment paper.
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder
and salt. Set aside.
Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat butter until smooth.
Slowly pour in the sugar, mixing as you pour. Beat sugar
and butter for a minute, until light and fluffy.
Add egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, mixing until
combined and scraping the sides of the bowl as needed.
Add in flour mixture and mix until just combined.
Add 1/2 cup sprinkles and stir by hand until combined.
Scoop a heaping tablespoon of dough and roll into a ball
(or use a 1 1/2 tablespoon scoop).
Place 1/4 cup sprinkles on a plate and press the tops of the
dough balls in additional sprinkles (optional).
Place dough balls onto prepared baking sheet leaving about
an inch for spreading.
Bake for 8-10 minutes. The edges should be completely set,
and the centers should look slightly under cooked, they will
finish cooking while cooling on the baking sheet.
Place the baking sheets on wire racks to cool. Repeat with
remaining dough once the baking sheets are completely cool.

Notes: Butter should be softened slightly. It should not be starting to

melt, or losing its shape.

KEEP THE KINDNESS GOING

Encourage your children to be kind constantly by keeping
track of their acts.
This paper chain of kindness can grow and grow as you,
your child and other family members do acts of kindness
and any acts of kindness that others do for them.

Be sure to think some good thoughts!
Today’s Chant:
I am loved
I am kind

I am awesome
